Shields are the side covers that hide the bearings. The shields help protect the inner bearings and moving parts from dust and dirt. However, some spinner enthusiasts and pro yoyo players prefer unshielded (aka 'open' or 'deshielded') bearings, because they are easier to clean.  We now sell both shielded and unshielded versions of this best-selling Vivace bearing.
