Metal Model Kit FAQ

Some tips from SkillToyz.com on how to construct your IQ Metal Model Kits.

Breakages and how to avoid them

These metal model kits are made from thin sheets of laser cut steel. During construction it is inevitable that pieces are going to break off at times. Bending the metal parts can lead to breakage if you do it repeatedly. If you have to bend the same piece multiple times, it can help to let the metal cool between bends.

If you repeatedly bend the same piece the metal will fatigue and break, so minimise the number of bends you make - “check twice, bend once”.

Where you have to twist the metal to hold it in place, do this after bending. ie. Fold the tabs first. Once you are sure the piece is set, twist it to secure it.

Tools and accessories

Small metal cutters to snip out the pieces or sharp scissors can help. Similarly, small jewellery pliers to hold and bend pieces are recommended. Fine nose pliers, small sharp scissors and tweezers will be helpful.

Some pieces are small and easily lost. It is a good idea to build this model over a clean, clear surface in case you drop any pieces.

These are small models with very small parts. A good desk light really helps. A magnifying glass may also be useful. A desktop set of small clamps to help hold pieces can also help a lot when you need that third hand.

Finally, when pieces don't break off smoothly, use a fine metal file on the edge.
